Off Season (if you take one)- Tips, Tactics, and working to get better at Coyote Hunting

  •      Coyote hunting for us typically runs from mid-September through mid-March.  In our area springtime gets busy with everyone in the fields and once crops are planted, we are very limited on where we can hunt.

  •      The off season (if you take one), can be a great time to work on your shooting.  Take the time to really get your gun dialed and spend time shooting from different locations and distances.  This is also when we work on our reloading and testing out new loads.  Each year we try to set goals to better our shooting and push our distance further for shots.
  • This season I purchased a full-size coyote silhouette with reactive vital area from Full Size AR500 Side Profile Reactive Coyote Target - Atlas Target Works.  Really looking forward to ringing some steel and having an actual true to life size target to shoot at.  We will also be spending time in shooting off the tripod vs shooting from the bench to be truer to real hunting scenarios.

  •      This can also be a great time to take a tour of your current property's and look for possible new areas to gain permission.  We mainly night hunt now, so taking a look at places in the daytime when you are not rolling in hunt mode can be very helpful for the next time you come into an area.  OnX maps is our go to for marking out all our current spots and wish list areas.  This can be helpful to help head you in the right direction when you want to go see where you might be able to gain permission.

  •      This is also the time where we like to do an assessment of our overall gear and vehicle setup.  Seems like once you roll through a whole season of calling you find things that you want to tweak.  From better setup in the vehicle to be more organized to different pack and lanyard setups, etc.

  •      So, if you do take time off from coyote hunting this can be a great time to fix those areas that were lacking from the previous season.  We are always trying to learn and get better.  If you have something to add that could help someone out, feel free to leave it in the comments below.
